Job Description

Deputy Head Teacher – South London

An exciting Deputy Head Teacher role is available for an Ofsted rated ‘Good’ Secondary school in South London.

The school’s vision is to build a world class school where every student is give the opportunity and support to achieve their highest potential and where there is reliable strong performance year on year. The school community is a vibrant one, throughout which the quality of relationships are excellent.

The school is currently on its journey to reach an Outstanding Ofsted rating and ensures teaching and learning is at the heart of everything they do.

The governing body are now looking for an ambitious and enthusiastic Deputy Head Teacher to join them in January 2018 and support the school’s journey in becoming a world class place of learning.


Purpose of post:

  • To support the Head Teacher in securing the continued improvement and success of the school

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide the Head Teacher and Leadership team support and work with them to develop and deliver the school’s educational and strategic direction

  • Be a key driver for development and change as well as the main point of contact

  • Contribute to review all areas of the school and develop and implement improvement plans. This will include lesson observations, learning walks, data analysis and attending review meetings

  • Be an outstanding practitioner and role model for teaching and learning

  • Ensure that all students have equality of opportunity and can work to their optimum

  • Inspire and motivate learners, staff and all members of the learning community and its partners to set high expectations for every learner

  • Managing the safety and welfare of all within their area of responsibility, giving due regard to health and safety legislation

  • Effectively managing resources and budget within their area of responsibility to ensure best value

  • Maintain and develop the highest quality systems to ensure that all events, activities and day to day management run smoothly and efficiently

  • Develop and promote policies and procedures that ensure the school’s distinctive ethos and aims are reflected in our practice

  • Create and maintain an effective partnership and good communication with parents and carers to support and improve students’ achievement and personal development

  • Working with others to establish, sustain and enhance a culture of learning and a positive ethos in collaboration with the whole school community to ensure that every learner achieves their potential

  • Building, maintaining and reviewing partnerships with other professions and agencies to support the learning, pastoral and emotional needs of learners

  • Working with the team to systematically gather and use assessment feedback and learner’s progress data to evaluate and plan future learning

  • Take a lead role with other senior leaders across the school for ensuring that staff CPD needs are both identified and supported

  • Supporting a culture of professional learning and motivating others to take on leadership roles and engage in regular and rigorous self-evaluation, individually and collectively

  • Supporting the Head Teacher and Leadership team in setting, and communicating clearly, high expectations of the quality of teaching and assessment at all stages in the school

  • Report to the Head Teacher and governors regularly and attend governor meetings and various committees as directed


Person Specification

In order to be considered for this role, you will:

  • Be an experienced leader who is already contributing significantly to whole-school developments

  • Have an understanding of the National Curriculum developments and design

  • Have experience of whole school data analysis, reporting and target setting

  • Have the potential and desire to be active and influential across the whole leadership spectrum

  • Be passionate about high expectations and standards of achievement for all

  • Be passionate about teaching and learning and an excellent teacher

  • Be an enthusiastic team player

  • Be prepared to do what it takes to make the experience of school a positive and productive one

  • Have excellent communication skills and have the ability to build relationships within the school community as well as the wider community

  • Be patient and empathetic where needed

  • Be trusted with sensitive and confidential information

  • If you have experience in Pastoral, Teaching & Learning and Improving behaviour this is highly welcomed
