The position provides the opportunity for a well-qualified, inspirational teacher of History to teach up to A-level, and to contribute to a flourishing department in both its curricular and extra-curricular activities for at least a term and possibly more.
We are looking for a well-qualified graduate of History with excellent subject knowledge and a passion for the subject. She/he will have excellent organisational and time management skills and the ability to produce creative solutions to challenges. She/he will be a good communicator who can enthuse and inspire pupils and will have exciting ideas about the teaching of History and ways in which girls can be inspired both within and outside the curriculum. The ideal candidate will be fully committed to the vibrant extra-curricular life of the school. An ability to teach Politics is preferred but not a requirement for this post.
The History and Politics Department
The department has a high profile within the School and it has consistently remained popular in relation to choices at IGCSE and A Level. History is studied by all from Years 7 to 9; there is a strong showing at IGCSE with three classes in each Year group.
At A Level there are currently three History classes in both Years 12 and 13. Many have chosen to study the subject at university: last year there were three successful Oxbridge applications for History. There has been a significant increase in the number of girls opting for Government & Politics at A Level: there are currently two classes in both Year 12 and Year 13.
The department is made up of the Head of History & Politics and three full-time and three part-time teachers, some of whom teach other subjects in Years 7 to 9. There are three main class-teaching rooms, one used for 6th form teaching and the others for lower school.
The department is well equipped with resources both in the department and in the school library. The department has developed a comprehensive website filled with resources for teachers and pupils. This is backed up by the generous IT provision and support which the school enjoys. There are ICT rooms and individual laptops and iPad for pupils.
