Haelthcare Assistant/ Teaching Assistant - Special Needs School
Purpose of the Job; To support the nursing team with their duties that enable students with complex disabilities to engage with their normal day to day activities. This includes carrying out clinical interventions, recognising when a student becomes unwell and reporting to the registered nurses.
There is also an element of social care whereby you will be responsible for working alongside students in their bungalows and supporting the students in all aspects of daily living including personal care.
Main duties and responsibilities;
To deliver high quality clinical care to all students at valence school. You will be required to learn how to safely administer medication and document according to NMC guidelines.
You will be required to assess an unwell student and take vital signs and report your findings to the registered nurse.
You will be required to administer enteral feeds safely and be able to trouble shoot any problems arising from this.
You will be responsible for maintaining stock of medication, reordering medication and rotating stock.
You will be required to learn clinical skills such as suction, cough assist, female catheterisation, diabetes care, tracheostomy care, and first aid. This list is not exhaustive and there may be times that you are required to learn additional clinical skills. You will be taught the necessary skills and are expected to pass your competencies within a 6 month time frame.
To work within a multi-disciplinary team and have insight into each discipline’s field of work.
To support students within the learning environments in order to promote named student’s intellectual, physical, social, emotional and spiritual development.
To promote a caring environment and the provision of a high standard of personal care including mealtime assistance.
To work with students on an individual basis who require one to one assistance due to their medical needs.
You will have excellent communication skills and establish a good rapport with the students, their parents and your colleagues. You will also act in a friendly but professional manner and understand the boundaries that are set out when working with young people.
To maintain high standards of safety and observe good practice in relation to health and safety issues.
To be aware of and pro-actively observe all school policies.
To have an up to date knowledge of the school’s safeguarding and whistleblowing policy and know how to raise concerns about students and/or colleagues.
To appropriately use the recording and reporting processes whenever appropriate.
The role will include a substantial amount of moving and handling.
To study towards the completion of the Children’s Workforce Diploma at Level 3, if applicable. This will include some study outside working hours.

The role will include a substantial amount of moving and handling and moving and handling procedures have to be adhered to at all times in accordance with training provided.
To study towards the completion of the Residential Childcare diploma or the diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools Level 3, if applicable. This will include some study outside working hours.
To be aware and integrate in own practice the principles of Keeping Children Safe in Education (Statutory Guidance part 1). The list is not exhaustive and may include additional comparable tasks as agreed from time to time with line manager
To maintain a flexible “can do” approach.
Be aware of and pro-actively observe all school policies.
95% of students are in a wheelchair. The use of hoists and other mobilising equipment is a daily occurrence, attending to students personal hygiene needs and feeding some students is the reality of the role. Of course this is not the only thing a candidate would do and it would not be all day, there is a lot of variation in the roles.
The responsibilities of each candidate will depend on the shift they work.
To have someone ‘ready to go’ they need the enhanced adult and child DBS, valid UK passport or documentation proving the right to work in the UK. They will also need Adult and Child safeguarding and Manual Handling evidence.
Shifts do vary and can be very flexible. For example; 07.00am – 14.00pm 08.45am – 16.15pm 16.00pm – 22.00pm
