Job Description

TLTP are currently seeking a Deputy Nursery Manager to work within a private nursery based in Lambeth, Brixton. This a family owned nursery that caters for 15 children aged 3 months to 8 years.


Hours: 20 - 40 per week
Holiday: 28 days per annum inclusive of 8 statutory holidays
Salary: £10 - £15 per hour (depending on experience and qualification)
Area Based: Room/office based
Responsible to: Nursery Manager

Job Description:

The Deputy Manager will go about their duties with honesty and integrity and ensure the nursery needs are always met and take precedence.

The main aim of the role is to support the Manager in all aspects of Nursery matters. They must be conversant with all policies and procedures, the job description of the manager and all other staff, and must be able to manage the nursery is the absence of the manager. They must work as part of the staff team and liaise between the staff and the managers.

  • A full and relevant Level 3 qualification as defined by the Children’s Workforce Development Council
  • Three satisfactory relevant references
  • You must have the legal right to work in the UK
  • This position is subject to an Enhanced DBS Disclosure, Overseas Police Clearances (if applicable) and professional reference checks
  • The relevant skills to support the management of a children’s nursery within the ethos, implementation and legal requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage
  • Relevant skills in working with groups of children aged 0 - 8 years
  • The ability to support the Nursery Manager in all aspects of the efficient and organised administration of Nursery matters
  • A willingness to learn the policies and procedures and to abide by the staff rules
  • An excellent understanding of children's development, their needs and the provision of positive play
  • An ability to provide a high-quality integrated early education and childcare service which complies with the Early Years Foundation Stage
  • The skills to supervise staff and be involved in the recruitment, induction, training, counselling and disciplining of staff
  • An ability to work with parents and outside agencies to ensure the individual learning requirements of children with particular needs, disabilities or those who require additional support.
  • A commitment to the theory and practice of equal opportunities
  • An awareness of health and safety issues relating to the provision
  • An ability to work on own initiative and an ability to supervise other staff members
  • An ability to communicate effectively with parents and build a relationship of trust with them
  • An ability to produce high-quality reports/documents as appropriate
  • A willingness to work as part of and contribute positively to the staff team

Statutory Requirements

The Deputy must work with the Manager to ensure the nursery complies with the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework.

They must ensure good practice as set out in the EYFS Practice Guidance and they must ensure compliance with all relevant statutory regulations, for example, Health and Safety Law and Employment Law.

  • When deputising, the Deputy Manager must execute the responsibilities of a Nursery Manager according to all lawful and ethical standards. The Manager has responsibility for the nursery, including out-of-hours, if necessary.
  • Attendance
  • The Deputy must ensure that a Manager or Deputy is present in the nursery at all times during opening hours. The Manager and Deputy must cover each other’s duties should either of them be absent. Due to the seniority of the role, it is expected that the Deputy will have a high level of attendance.


At all times the Deputy Manager must display a high level of enthusiasm, loyalty and motivation and must adhere to the correct policies and ethos of the nursery. They must promote equal opportunities for all. They must at all times promote the good name of the nursery. They must ensure their appearance is neat and tidy at all times, is appropriate for their status and that they abide by the correct dress code. They must be a role model of good practice.

The Children

The Deputy Manager must at all times ensure the safety, care, welfare and happiness of the children in the Nursery. They must ensure all children have access to resources, equipment, activities and learning opportunities to reach their full development and potential.

The Deputy Manager must be aware any children in their care with special needs (including special educational needs and disabilities) and is proactive in ensuring appropriate action is taken to promote the welfare and development of those children within the nursery.

The Deputy Manager must ensure that all adults working and looking after children in the nursery are able to put the appropriate procedures for the Safeguarding of Children into practice.
