Erith School is a large, mixed secondary modern school (1,950 on roll) on the Bexley/Kent border. The school is located 15 minutes away from the Dartford Tunnel and the M25. The A2 is 10 minutes away. Bexley has three different main railway lines running through it that connect from Kent into the main line stations of London Victoria, London Bridge, Charing Cross and Cannon Street in less than 30 minutes. The nearest stations are Barnehurst (20 minute walk) and Erith (5 minute car or bus ride). Erith School has been an independent “converter” Academy since October 2010.
The school are currently recruiting for a Head of 6th Form who is able s appointment is available at an exciting time in a large, complex and dynamic school which is currently going through a period of positive change in 6th form provision. Erith School is part of a 16+ collaboration with two local schools – Trinity and Welling. Erith School 6th form is based in the David Friend building which provides excellent resources and facilities exclusive to 6th form teachers and students. We currently have around 270 students on roll in the 6th form.
The person who is appointed as Head of 6th form will have a distinct passion for Post 16 teaching, learning and education. He or she will be able to articulate Post 16 educational values with enthusiasm and serious conviction. This position represents a challenge to develop our 6th form provision from ‘Good’ (Ofsted 2017) to outstanding. In this respect it will mean commitment, hard work, stamina, resilience and a surfeit of enthusiasm.
• Make substantive contributions to 6th form policy.
• Share in the high profile role required of Senior Middle Managers within and around the school.
• Develop a team of 6th form Tutors.
• Liaise with the Post 16 Partnership leads.
• Develop a close working relationship with the Heads of Year.
• Be able to create a positive team ethos and to lead colleagues in an atmosphere of consultative and open management.
• Value all students irrespective of ability, gender or ethnicity
• Foster equal opportunities.
• Tackle difficult issues and confront poor practice.
• Celebrate success and achievement.
• Review and develop the current 6th form curriculum and pastoral programme.
• Liaise with Heads of Faculties and Heads of Year.
• Establish an environment for sound learning.
• Provide a system of Pastoral and Academic support.
• Foster greater involvement and responsibility of students at Erith through the activities of the school officers.
• Prepare 6th form timetable needs in consultation with Deputy Head (line manager).
• Provide set lists and detailed information for each student.
• Oversee UCAS procedures.
• Support and train Form Tutors concerning UCAS procedures and writing of references.
• Take responsibility for ‘coaching’ Higher Education interviews particularly for Oxford and Cambridge.
• Organise Open Evenings/Days for potential 6th form entrants (Autumn and Spring Term).
• Counsel students who are unsettled and lack self-discipline.
• To liaise with key stakeholders to maintain the good reputation of the 6th form
• To monitor and improve attendance
• Provide accurate nominal roll numbers to the Deputy Heads, administration team and SLT.
• Organise and support a variety of 6th form ‘social’ events.
• To attend necessary/relevant Parents’ Evenings.
• Develop curriculum enrichment opportunities including work experience
• Prepare and contribute to 6th form assemblies.
• Ensure a high standard of 6th form code of dress and standards of behaviour.
• Co-ordinate the work of the 6th form Form Tutors.
• Oversee the PSHE programme.
• Provide agendas, minutes and chair 6th form Year meetings.
• Improve all administration/reporting, assessment/monitoring/profiles procedures. Keep a detailed ‘learner record’ for each student.
• Monitor and review private study facilities and provision.
• To keep accurate and up to date records of student destinations.
• Provide a structure for Career Guidance in consultation with the Head of Life Skills Faculty.
• To manage Bursary funds and make decisions on discretionary payments.
• A relevant teaching qualification
• A relevant higher educational qualification
• Evidence of continuous INSET and commitment to further professional development
• At least 2 years’ experience of pastoral leadership.
• At least 2 years’ experience of 6th form teaching.
• To have a wide knowledge of issues relating to 6th education including curriculum planning and assessment.
• Knowledge of ALPS and L3VA.
• Working knowledge of 6th form funding issues.
• Experience of developing / supporting school curricular enrichment activities.
• Effectively lead strategies to support staff development
• Create a positive team spirit, delegating and negotiating, when necessary, with sensitivity
• Manage a budget effectively
• Participate in the continuing development of links with other professionals, training institutions and community groups
• Communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) to a variety of audiences
• Promote the school’s aims and the use of effective strategies to monitor motivation and morale.
