In this course, you will develop a clear understanding of what is meant by independent learners and why fostering independence is such an important part of effective teaching. You will explore the key features of successful independent learning and build a practical toolkit of strategies to help promote and support independence in learners.
Across three modules, the course supports you in developing clarity around what independent learning is and what it is not, examining how independence looks in the classroom, and identifying practical next steps to develop independence through planning and lesson design.
Module One: Independent Learning Defined and Why It Matters
This module builds on the definition of independent learning to develop greater clarity. You will explore what it means for a learner to be independent, clarify common misconceptions, and consider why investing time in developing independence benefits both classroom learning and learners beyond school.
Module Two: Key Features of Effective Independent Learning
This module explores what independent learning looks like in practice. You will consider the essential components of independent learning from both a teacher’s and a learner’s perspective, including the skills and behaviours learners need to develop.
Module Three: Developing Independence in Learners
This module focuses on identifying practical next steps to support learner independence. You will explore strategies linked to planning and lesson design, with an emphasis on introducing independence gradually and sustainably.
