Residential Night Awake Childcare Officer :

Scale 6 (Points 13-17) + Night awake allowance

Shift pattern: Mon -Thu 9.45pm – 8.30am

40 hours Based Residential  House :

House and School staff, pupils, parents/carers, outside agencies Job Purpose:

  • To be responsible for the health, welfare and comfort of all children
  • To monitor the children’s sleeping in the House
  • Contribute to agreed children’s plans where appropriate
  • To work as a member of the Residential team, in accordance with the House and school’s policies, under the direction of the Head of Residential Care Principal Accountabilities:
  • To undertake and oversee all night-time duties, ensuring prioritisation of key tasks including shift reports and other records as required
  • To prioritise the safeguarding, health, welfare and comfort of children always

Job Description: Residential Night Awake Childcare Officer

Duties:

  • To receive a briefing relevant to the previous day from senior team member leading the shift
  • To check all children at 30-minute intervals, unless otherwise instructed, or the need arises
  • To change and wash/shower children who are wet or dirty, unless otherwise instructed
  • To offer basic medical supervision under the instruction of the person in charge for the evening and to monitor pupils known to be unwell
  • To alert all staff on shift of any child who becomes unwell in the night
  • To take appropriate action to ensure the health, safety and security of all children and staff
  • To ensure that all children are encouraged to remain in their bedrooms throughout the night, unless otherwise instructed
  • To be aware of emergency procedures, e.g. fire drills, and, as the most alert person during the night, to telephone the emergency services in case of fire or emergency
  • To be aware of, and implement, procedures for dealing with disturbances, intruders or inappropriate activity
  • To maintain a daily log which records any instances of inappropriate activity, disturbances or medical problems
  • To remain awake and vigilant all night, to undertake such duties that are in keeping with the nature of the post which shall be determined by the Head of Residential Care or their representative on duty. Priority should be given to the security and protection of pupils
  • To liaise with morning staff regarding all children, and ensure adequate hand-over information is given
  • To assist colleagues during hand-over periods
  • To use whichever form of communication is being used by the children in the House
  • To contribute to the upkeep of the building and report the need for repairs
  • Attendance/ keep up-to date with all meeting minutes of staff meetings
  • To participate in staff training days (INSET days), undertake a Level 3 qualification within three months of commencing the role (if necessary) and external course as may be required by the needs of the post and as identified with the Head of Residential Care
  • To attend regular supervision meetings with the Head of Residential Care
  • To carry out other duties at the request of the officer in charge
