This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience supporting young people with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs, SEBD, EBD, or ASD, particularly those who may display challenging behaviours.

The school supports students aged 11–18, providing a safe, structured and supportive learning environment where young people can re-engage with education, develop positive coping strategies, and achieve successful outcomes.

About the Role

As a Learning Support Assistant / Behaviour Mentor, you will support students both in and out of the classroom, helping them manage behaviour, engage with learning, and build confidence.

You will work closely with teachers, SEN staff, and the wider pastoral team to support students through highly personalised learning plans and tailored interventions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting students aged 11–18 with SEMH and behavioural needs in lessons and during interventions
  • Building positive and trusting relationships with students and staff
  • Assisting teachers in delivering engaging learning activities aligned with the curriculum
  • Supporting or covering lessons when required
  • Helping students regulate behaviour and develop social and emotional skills
  • Contributing to individual education plans and behaviour strategies
  • Monitoring and assessing student progress
  • Liaising with external professionals, including social workers, educational psychologists, and therapists

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, EBD, SEBD, ASD, or mental health needs
  • Strong behaviour management skills
  • Experience working in secondary, SEN, or specialist provision settings
  • The ability to build rapport with students who may be disengaged from education
  • Confidence supporting small groups or covering lessons when required
  • A patient, resilient, and proactive approach
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a car is essential
  • Team Teach or MAPA training (desirable but not essential)
  • A current Child & Adult DBS on the Update Service

What the School Offers

  • A supportive and experienced staff team
  • Ongoing professional development and training opportunities
  • A chance to make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable young people
  • A positive and structured learning environment focused on progress and wellbeing
  • Opportunity for the role to become permanent for the right candidate

If you are passionate about supporting young people with additional needs and thrive in a challenging yet rewarding environment, this could be an excellent opportunity to develop your career within SEMH education in Bishop’s Stortford.
