By completing this course, you will develop a clear understanding of sensory integration and the eight senses that shape how we experience the world. You will deepen your knowledge of how sensory information is processed and recognise that individuals have different sensory thresholds.
The course supports you in identifying common sensory processing challenges and the behaviours that may result. You will explore difficulties linked to sensory discrimination, modulation, and motor planning, and examine a range of practical strategies that can be applied within the primary classroom. You will also reflect on your own learning environment and consider how to provide effective supports and adaptations to meet the sensory needs of all pupils.
This course is structured across five modules.
Module One: Introduction to Senses and Sensory Integration
This module introduces the concept of sensory integration, including key definitions and background theory. It explores sensory processing and how the eight senses are integrated into everyday life.
Module Two: Sensory Integration Theory and Models
This module examines sensory integration theory through Jean Ayres’ model and explores the four levels of integration. It also introduces Sensory Processing Disorder as outlined by Dr Lucy Miller, offering a clear and accessible framework for school-based practice.
Module Three: Sensory Processing and Integration Difficulties
This module explores who may experience sensory processing difficulties, why these challenges occur, and what can be done to support pupils effectively.
Module Four: Sensory Strategies and Supporting Behaviour
This module focuses on practical classroom strategies. You will explore common behaviours linked to sensory needs, consider how these relate to one or more of the eight senses, and examine targeted sensory supports. The module also includes whole-class and whole-school approaches that benefit all pupils.
Module Five: Planning for Provision
This final module supports you in applying learning from the course to everyday practice. You will explore tools such as planning and provision maps and a sensory profile to help identify and support individual pupil needs, with the aim of positively impacting teaching and learning.
