By the end of this course, you will understand why learning objectives are important in supporting learning and progress. You will develop the skills needed to write clear, concise, and appropriate learning objectives and outcomes, and explore practical ways to embed them into tuition sessions or classroom practice.
Across four modules, the course supports you in understanding the purpose of learning objectives and outcomes, improving how they are written, embedding them meaningfully into learning, and using them to measure progress.
Module One: What Are Learning Objectives and Outcomes?
This module explores what learning objectives and outcomes are and the differences between them. You will examine the value of using objectives and outcomes in lessons and tuition, reflect on differing professional views, and gain clarity on the position of The Thirsty Scholars Partnership and Connex Education Partnership.
Module Two: Writing Great Objectives and Outcomes for Learning
This module focuses on developing clear and concise learning objectives and outcomes. You will explore what makes a high-quality objective or outcome, common pitfalls to avoid, and practical strategies to improve your writing. Bloom’s Taxonomy is introduced as a useful tool for selecting effective verbs and command words.
Module Three: Embedding Objectives and Outcomes into Learning
This module supports reflection on current practice and explores ways to embed learning objectives and outcomes meaningfully into lessons or tuition. You will examine practical approaches that move beyond simply sharing objectives at the start, promoting active learning and student engagement.
Module Four: Measuring Progress Against Objectives and Outcomes
This module focuses on using learning objectives and outcomes to measure student progress throughout a session. You will explore why monitoring progress is important and examine quick and effective strategies to assess progress against objectives and outcomes.
