In this course, you will develop the skills needed to plan effective lessons with clear aims and objectives, structure activities to make purposeful use of time, and engage learners through a range of teaching approaches. You will also explore how to incorporate assessment and reflection into lessons to support ongoing learning and improvement.
Across three modules, the course focuses on understanding learner disaffection, building strong relationships, and adapting teaching and curriculum approaches to successfully re-engage reluctant learners.
Module One: Exploring the Causes of Disaffection and Understanding Why Re-Engaging Reluctant Learners Matters
This module explores the causes of learner disaffection and why re-engaging reluctant learners is so important. You will examine motivation, including how to support learners in developing intrinsic motivation and a growth mindset. The module also considers how working positively with schools, parents, and carers can support re-engagement, supported by practical advice and guidance.
Module Two: Building Relationships and Rapport With Reluctant Learners
This module focuses on building trust, relationships, and rapport with reluctant learners. You will explore Blanchard’s ABCD model of trust and reflect on how to manage your own emotions when working with challenging situations. Practical approaches support you in creating the conditions for success from the very first lesson.
Module Three: Adapting the Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning to Re-Engage Reluctant Learners
This module explores how to adapt both curriculum content and teaching approaches to re-engage reluctant learners. You will consider key questions around what to teach, how to make learning relevant, and how to build on prior knowledge. The module also examines how Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction can support effective adaptation of teaching to improve learning outcomes.
