This course aims to increase your understanding of metacognition and how it supports learners to be successful both within and beyond the school setting. You will explore how metacognition helps learners think effectively, solve problems, and approach both familiar and unfamiliar situations with confidence.
The course also examines how metacognition supports learners in transferring knowledge to different contexts and encourages a shift from dependence towards greater independence.
Across four modules, you will explore the key phases of the metacognitive process, from planning and goal setting through to monitoring, evaluation, and reflection.
Module One: Definition and Importance of Metacognition
This module introduces what metacognition is and why it matters. Metacognition is defined as “thinking about thinking,” and you will explore the processes involved when learners plan, monitor, evaluate, and reflect on their learning in order to achieve their goals.
Module Two: Goal Setting and Strategy Planning
This module focuses on goal setting and strategy planning as key elements of metacognition. You will explore how learners set learning goals and plan strategies at the start of the learning process to support success.
Module Three: Monitoring and Self-Regulation
This module explores monitoring and self-regulation within the metacognitive process. You will examine how learners put plans into action, monitor their progress, and adjust their approach as needed to stay on track towards their learning goals.
Module Four: Evaluation and Self-Reflection
This module focuses on evaluation and self-reflection. You will explore how learners evaluate the effectiveness of their strategies and consider how these approaches can be applied in future learning contexts.
