Celebrating World Book Day 2026: Inspiring a love of reading for every child

World Book Day returns on Thursday 5th March 2026 bringing with it one of the most exciting literacy celebrations of the year. Schools, families, publishers and bookshops across the UK and Ireland will unite with one shared purpose: to inspire children to discover the joy of reading for fun.

Whether you're an educator, parent or simply someone passionate about books, World Book Day is a chance to create magical reading moments that can shape futures.

Why World Book Day matters more than ever

At its core, World Book Day is a charity dedicated to ensuring every child has the opportunity to own a book and develop a lifelong habit of reading for pleasure. Research shows reading for fun is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success, even more than family background or income.

Yet today only one in three children actually enjoys reading, highlighting the need for initiatives that make reading feel fun, social and accessible.

World Book Day addresses this gap by distributing millions of £1 book tokens, giving every child the chance to choose a book of their very own. It includes a fresh line-up of 16 new titles, selected with children’s input, ensures there’s something for every reader

What’s new for World Book Day 2026?

A bigger celebration than ever during the National Year of Reading

This year’s event takes place during the National Year of Reading 2026, meaning even more activities, events and community celebrations are planned to get children excited about books.

No theme. Just reading for fun

Unlike in previous years, World Book Day 2026 has no set theme. The aim is simple: remove pressure, encourage choice and help children enjoy reading in ways that feel natural to them. The charity highlights six key elements that support reading for pleasure, including choice, time, access and fun.

Ideas to celebrate World Book Day

1. Join live events and virtual author sessions
From the BBC’s Live Lesson exploring stories as “travel passes”, to Scholastic’s online events with authors like Liz Pichon and Philip Reeve, there’s a host of exciting virtual sessions for pupils. These are perfect for sparking classroom discussion and showing children how diverse and exciting the world of books can be.

Take part in the great Big Footy & Booky Quiz
The National Literacy Trust’s annual football‑themed reading quiz is back, mixing the excitement of sports with the joy of books, a great option for reluctant readers who love football.

Get creative with low-cost dressing up
Many schools still enjoy the tradition of dressing as book characters, but World Book Day stresses this should be low‑pressure and low-cost. We’ve put together some simple, stressfree World Book Day costume ideas that you can create with ease.

Build a cosy classroom or home reading nook
A reading corner doesn’t need elaborate décor, just a quiet spot, some cushions, and a handful of appealing books. Creating a peaceful space helps reading feel like a treat, not a task.

Run a book swap
Encourage pupils or colleagues to bring a book and exchange it for someone else’s favourite. It’s simple, cost-free and builds excitement around discovering new stories.

Why we should all get involved

World Book Day is much more than dressing up or one-off activities. It tackles a real challenge: children without access to books at home. The initiative plays a vital role in reducing the literacy gap, fostering confidence and opening the door to imagination.

By participating, whether in classrooms, libraries, offices or homes we help make reading joyful, inclusive and accessible for every child.

Happy World Book Day 2026. Let’s help every child open the door to a new story.
